Having bombed out with a DNF in the Hinckley 5k earlier on in June, McCarkiss athlete Chris Jordan had set his sights on a trip to the notoriously fast course at Wythenshawe Park, South Manchester, to take part in one of the ‘Sale Sizzlers’. Figuring that if McCarthy could run 16:00 fuelled by nothing more than beer and the satisfaction from ridiculing Simkiss then a sub 16 should be on the cards for high mileage man ‘CJ’.
Arguably it was a bit of a long drive for 16 (or hopefully less) minutes of effort, and as expected traffic was apocalyptic, Jordan descended into a panic and calling on McCarthy’s local knowledge of the best places to park, helping him save valuable seconds in his rush to race HQ. The stress levels were not the ideal pre-race preparation, but fortunately made it to the start line with just 90 minutes to spare (yes, minutes). All that was needed now was a decent run to avoid a miserable drive home alone.
Chris reported back to MCKEP headquarters:
Everyone looks like a better runner up here in NW. Heard some guy who was built like a tank (in an SAS kind of way) saying he was going to hold back and run the first mile in 5 minutes. Decided I was going to sit on.
First lap was a stampede and passed through 400m in 1:10. Sat back on Brava 2-0 and first K was a then fairly relaxed 3:07.
Hitting the proper path we stretched out a bit to catch local legend Gareth Raven who pulled us through the next 3ks in 3:03, 3:08 and with Raven now surging a 3:00.
At this point I couldn’t hack the pace as McNab and Raven continued their surge, the latter posting an estimated 2:50 last K but nevertheless I managed to grind out a 3:11 last K for an 18 second pb of 15:31. Weyhey!
NOW – following some heartfelt and moving congratulation from Simkiss, there followed a potential offhand implication that the that the course, like all courses up North, was short – in defence of the many PBs that occurred at Sale consider this …
When everyone runs faster than they ever have before at Berlin is THAT a short course?
When everyone PBs at Leeds is THAT a short course?
When McCarthy inexplicably knocks over a minute off his Half Marathon PB for the second time in a month and everyone’s GPS measures 13mi or less – is THAT a…. oh wait…
Some courses are perfect for a fast time, and Sale Sizzler being 700m on track, totally flat and with a strong field is one of them.
Jordan concluded; “I challenge anyone to go there and NOT run a pb.”
Jordan’s 15:31 result at Sale sets a New McCarkiss Endurance Project 5k Record and is a testament to the effort and mileage he’s put in recently, with Adcock putting in similar efforts in training, it’s no wonder they’re both in peak shape… meanwhile McCarthy must be training in secret, focussing on the Bristol Half, and Simkiss has begun his annual period of pretending he’s going to become a triathlete.
